Chase and Status
Local Hero Mark Knopfler will be joined by multi-platinum selling electronic music duo Chase and Status and Mercury Music Prize nominees The Unthanks at the North East’s most spectacular event of the year.
The Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony on the Thursday 4th of September will also feature narration from local actress Jill Halfpenny and will celebrate a momentous world first, the Bupa Great North Run becoming the first running event in the world to reach a landmark one millionth finish.

This year, the Bupa Great North Run will be the first event of its kind in the world to reach its one millionth finish.
On Thursday 4 September, the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and the River Tyne will be transformed into a huge outdoor arena for an Opening Ceremony, marking the start of the official countdown to the 1 millionth finish of the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday 7 September.
Exciting news – our annual Moving Image Commission opens today!
The Great North Run Moving Image Commission awards an experienced artist or film-maker £30,000 to create a new work which responds to and captures the spirit of one of the world’s top sporting events. The new work is premiered in the North East in September every year as part of Great North Run Culture, with an extract screened on the BBC during their live coverage of the Run.

Thanks to support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we’re looking for a Programme Manager and a Project Officer to join our team.

The two new posts will develop and deliver our yearlong programme of exhibitions and events to celebrate the millionth finish of the Great North Run, in partnership with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
