Great North Run - credit North News & Pictures
This September, the Great North Run will be the first event of its kind in the world to reach its millionth finish, ahead of London, New York and Berlin. A celebration is in order!

We’re really excited to announce a grant of over £400,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support an ambitious programme of special events and exhibitions which will explore and celebrate the North East's sporting and industrial heritage.

We start 2014 with the news that Melanie Manchot’s Tracer (commissioned for our 2013 programme) will be featured in her upcoming solo exhibition at Oriel Davies Gallery in Wales. Plus Paul Smith talks #GNRC on BBC Radio 2, Hotspur Primary make a film inspired by Tracer and we look forward the 1 millionth finish of the Great North Run in September.

There’s another chance to see Melanie Manchot’s beautiful moving image work, Tracer in London this month.
Tracer will be screened at MOT International as part of When the Grid Goes Soft – Canadian artists Nathan Bomford and Cedric Bomford will construct an installation that will function as a sculptural form, as well as a framing device for the work of Melanie Manchot and Jakob Kolding.

We asked artist Paul Merrick, filmmaker Hal Branson and Apeuro Parkour & Freerunning to work with pupils from Hotspur Primary School to make a film inspired by Melanie Manchot's 'Tracer'. Here's the result (spoiler: it's absolutely brilliant and we couldn't be prouder).

Working with filmmaker Hal Branson, artist Paul Merrick and parkourist Craig Cheel, ten Year 5 Students from Hotspur School in Heaton, Newcastle embarked on an ambitious project to create a short film inspired by Melanie Manchot's 'Tracer' in three days. Paul tells us more about it in this project blog.
