News Mark Knopfler opening the GNR Million Opening Ceremony - tickets now on sale
Tickets are now on sale for the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside on Thursday 4th September, which will start the countdown to the millionth finish of the Bupa Great North Run in South Shields on Sunday 7th September. 
 
Rock legend Mark Knopfler will kick off the event with "Local Hero", the track that became the Bupa Great North Run's anthem. Four-time Grammy Award winner Knopfler is best known as the lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for global rock legends Dire Straits. 
 
The Opening Ceremony will feature music from Mark - and more acts yet to be announced, new writing, mass choreography, a giant floating sculpture, a specially commissioned film projected onto the Sage Gateshead, mass choreography, pyrotechnics and more. It will tell the incredible story of the North East, inspired by the energy of a million runners. 
 
Tickets are now on sale through Ticket Master, priced at £12 for an adult and £7 for a child (aged 12 or under).
