News 2015 Moving Image Commission open!

Exciting news – our annual Moving Image Commission opens today!

The Great North Run Moving Image Commission awards an experienced artist or film-maker £30,000 to create a new work which responds to and captures the spirit of one of the world’s top sporting events. The new work is premiered in the North East in September every year as part of Great North Run Culture, with an extract screened on the BBC during their live coverage of the Run.

Our selection panel this year is independent art critic, writer and curator Sacha Craddock; artist and course leader for Northumbria University’s MFA programme  at BALTIC 39, Fiona Crisp; curator, writer and North East Collector Development Manager at the Contemporary Art Society, Matthew Hearn; and Beth Bate, Director of Great North Run Culture.

We’re looking for high-quality work which shows original thought and ideas. It should excite, surprise and challenge a wide range of audiences, including those who may not be familiar with contemporary moving image work. The commission will fit within Great North Run Culture’s body of work which includes previous Moving Image Commissions, as well as films by Jane and Louise Wilson, Douglas Gordon and Mark Wallinger. These films have focused on participants and their stories, the physical exertion and movement of runners, the architecture of the route and archive footage of the Bupa Great North Run. The 2015 commission should add something new and original to this collection. We strongly advise people to look at previous work on our website:  www.greatnorthrunculture.org/moving-image

The closing date for expressions of interest is Wednesday 2nd July 2014. We’ll notify shortlisted artists on Thursday 10th July, before artist presentations in London on Monday 21st July.  The work needs to be completed by July 31st 2015 ready to feature in our 2015 programme.
