Great North Greats is a touring exhibition celebrating the millionth finish of the Great North Run and Tyneside's incredible sporting and industrial heritage.

Telling the stories of individuals and communities, everyday triumphs and groundbreaking achievements, it is a celebration of all of the Great North Greats – ordinary people, extraordinary achievements.

The has toured through a number of venues around the north east since September 2014 and this summer arrives at Discovery Museum Newcastle for the grand finale!

On top of the touring exhibition which features five of the regions celebrated ‘greats’ include inventor Joseph Swan, industrialists William Armstrong and Rachel Parsons as well as sporting legends Harry Clasper and Tanni Grey-Thompson, there will be a whole host of brand new exciting activities, interactive ways to get involved with some great north greats as well as a film screening - Objects to See Further uncovers the lives of some new great north greats, not yet featured in our exhibition including engineer Robert Stirling Newall and rower James Renforth.

Presented alongside them will be a growing number of digital stories and oral histories, highlighting many of the regions unsung heroes and their stories of triumph against the odds.

In addition, Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums will host a number of free Family Events throughout the holidays, including a Great North Great Sports Day on Thursday 20 August and a science extravaganza on Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August.
