Matt
Stokes has lived, studied and worked in the Northeast since 1993. His practice stems from an
ongoing inquiry into phenomena that provide a sense of collectivity, shaping
and influencing people’s lives and identities. His works are often made by
immersing himself in settings through which collaborations with informal
communities arise, resulting in films, installations and events.
Recent
solo exhibitions include Grundy Gallery (Blackpool, 2014), Whitechapel Gallery
(London, 2012), CAAC (Seville, Spain, 2011), De Hallen (Haarlem, Netherlands,
2011), Kunsthalle Fridericianum (Kassel, Germany, 2010), BALTIC Centre for
Contemporary Art (Gateshead, 2009), Arthouse (Austin, USA, 2009) and
Zabludowicz Collection (London, 2009), with forthcoming solo exhibitions at
Site Gallery and Sensoria (Sheffield, 2014) and Matt’s Gallery (London, 2015).
He
was the winner of the Becks Futures Prize in 2006 and more recently was shortlisted
for the Jarman Award 2012.
