An evening hosted by Andrew Brown, founder of Art / Books, in which Great North Run Culture commisioned artist Layla Curtis will talk about the inspiration and techniques behind her new Moving Image exhibition Heatscapes, a series of short films capturing the Great North Run with thermal imaging cameras.

The multi-screen installation with be showing the The Gallery, Tyneside Cinema until 4 October 2015.

Background

Each year Great North Run Culture commissions an artist to create a moving image art piece which is inspired by the Morrisons Great North Run. Winner of the commission for 2015 is artist Layla Curtis, who has created a series of short films which will be exhibited as a multi-screen installation at The Gallery, Tyneside Cinema from 10 September - 4 October.

The films, which were almost 12 months in the making, were filmed entirely with a thermal imaging camera and, as the name Heatscapes suggests, pays specific attention to the body temperature of the runners as they move through the route of the run and the heat they transfer to the landscape around them; leaving temporary, invisible imprints across the 13.1 mile route. 

Travel and movement are frequently at the heart of Layla's work, in which she looks at how space and the city can be re-claimed or re-imagined. We recommend this installation for an entirely different perpsective on the world's largest half marathon. 

Layla Curtis Biography

Travel and movement is at the heart of Layla’s work, which often investigates how architecture, space and the city can be subverted, re-claimed and re-imagined. Her practice has seen her travel to the Borneo rainforest to make her film Tong Tana, while living with nomadic hunter-gatherers. Her work is exhibited internationally to great acclaim, including exhibitions at Pavilhão Lucas Nogueira Garcez-Oca, São Paulo, Brazil and Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, Canada. It features in prestigious collections from the Tate Collection (UK) to the World Bank Collection (USA).

Andrew Brown Biography

Andrew Brown is a writer and the founder of London-based publisher Art / Books. He was formerly commissioning editor for art at Thames & Hudson and acting director of visual arts strategy at Arts Council England. He is the author of Art and Ecology Now, published last year by Thames & Hudson.
