Inspired by Claire Morgan’s stunning installation, Gone With The Wind, artist Paul Merrick has worked with a group of young people from Children North East to create HABITAT.

Exploring themes of journeys and habitats the young people from Children North East have created an art nature trail throughout Newcastle City Library. Responding to a space without gallery walls, a series of sculptures and drawings invite the audience to explore the library to discover the art.

Using sticky backed plastic the children were given the challenge of drawing with scissors to create a wide range of creatures that make their home along the river Tyne – dragonflies and fauna, a grey seal, an otter, a heron and a curlew all make an appearance on windows and book ends as part of the art trail.

In contrast to the two-dimensional collages the young people also created a series of mobiles using wire to sculpt three-dimensional drawings, floor based sculptures and kittiwake nests using recycled materials.
