Michael Baig-Clifford & Ravi Deepres : Runner

Runner, by Michael Baig-Clifford and Ravi Deepres, takes its audience as close as possible to the mental and physical experience of running a half-marathon through sound and the moving image.

Combining material from the BUPA Great North Run with specially shot sequences of a single runner, it follows the journey of a man, one soul in the flood of 50,000.

The film also features an original sound composition by :zoviet*france:

Runner starts with busy, noisy shots from digital video cameras to capture the chaotic feeling of being in the run, and moves through to 16mm film, which gradually immerses the viewer in the runner's imagination. These long wide shots, taken on the Pennines and the beach at South Shields, not only evoke memories of early morning training sessions but also the mental spaces that the runner escapes to when completing such a physical task.
