Matt Stokes : Objects to See Further

As part of the Great North Greats exhibition programme, Great North Run Culture and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums have commissioned visual artist Matt Stokes as the GNR Million artist in residence.

For this exhibition, Stokes has been researching the industrial heritage of Tyneside, particularly exploring the communities and pastimes that emerged from the working world.

Combining research conducted at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums with local myth and folklore, Stokes aims to uncover what lasting effect these people and their activities have on the social, cultural and sporting landscape of the North East.

For the first part of his residency, Stokes is producing a newspaper containing a selection of images from the collections at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, reflecting his interests and the direction that future works may take.

As the exhibition progresses along the route of the Bupa Great North Run and Stokes’ research develops, the number of pages will grow, eventually forming a curated scrapbook of influential material.
