Whetstone's published an article on his meeting with Fiona Banner in
today's Journal when she described her thoughts behind the major public
art project Tornado.
"I
was thinking of what was the most simple form of communication and this
idea of a bell as an instrument that doesn’t require a knowledge of
music in order to make it work ... and also the shape of it. As an
instrument it does look a bit like an ear. Most of my work is about language and communication but this
particular bell has a very unusual DNA. It comes from an object which
represents the opposite of language, a breakdown of communication.”
