By Thomas Hepburn Community School with Paul Merrick

Pupils from Gateshead's Thomas Hepburn Community School have taken part in an education project about Fiona Banner's Tornado.

The pupils worked with artist Paul Merrick over 6 weeks to explore some of the ideas and themes behind Tornado. The group learnt about approaches to contemporary art and artists’ practices. They also met with Fiona to discuss her work and find out more about Tornado, particularly recycling and the transformation of objects.

The group undertook experimental drawing creating large-scale drawings and paintings and created their own sculptures using found and recycled materials.

The pupils from Thomas Hepburn Community School were the first official ringers of the Tornado bell on Thursday 22 July.
