The Running Line was the world’s longest photographic display, a spectacular sculptural installation composed entirely of photographs taken at the 2006 BUPA Great North Run.

Over 139,000 images were collected from spectators, runners, their friends and families, participating celebrities, local schools, international media, official race photographers, event workers and volunteers.

Placed end to end these images created The Running Line which, at 13.1 miles, was the same length as the BUPA Great North Run itself. The spectacular installation formed a trail around Saltwell Park, culminating in a specially constructed dome, giving visitors a unique insight into the many thousands of individual journeys made on that incredible day.

Saltwell Towers housed an exhibition of photographs selected from the thousands donated and a commemorative book can be bought at the bookshop at Baltic or by emailing the Great North Run Cultural Programme.
