The Great North Run Cultural Programme launched in 2005 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the world’s largest half-marathon.
Our first year featured a new film by Jane and Louise Wilson, paintings by James Edwards, a movie homage by Alan Clark of Dire Straits performed with Northern Sinfonia, a commemorative publication by Richard Lewis and spectacular premier event at The Sage Gateshead.
Jane and Louise Wilson's film explores the brutalist architecture and urban spaces along the famous route of the Bupa Great North Run, often focusing on the relationship of runners to these spaces.
James Edwards was approached by Brendan Foster to create a new painting to celebrate the silver anniversary of the BUPA Great North Run.
The Great North Run, the First 25 Years and My Part In It was published to commemorate the 25th birthday of the BUPA Great North Run.
Alan Clark, formerly keyboardist with Dire Straits, teamed up with the Northern Sinfonia and hip-hop artist Daniel Anderson to create a unique soundtrack to his film Inspiration.
