Northumbria Fine Art graduates and Great North Run Culture commissioned artists Hope Stebbing and Oliver Perry will be among the first artists to exhibit at Gallery North, the University Gallery when it reopens tonight!
Their artwork, Onward Together As One, recently helped inspire 57,000 runners during the 2015 Great North Run and will help mark the gallery’s reopening as part of their exhibition Your World Tomorrow. Stebbing and Perry’s work looks at how language is used in the everyday, specifically in regeneration and political contexts. They explore how language can be used to fuel desire and aspiration, questioning how language can be manipulated through its typographical form and context.
It is the upstairs gallery that Onward Together As One will be exhibition: a major installation born out of our partnership with Northumbria University. The work was shown on the day of the half marathon as a pop up installation, occupying satellite locations throughout the run's different boroughs. Brought together here for the first time, the components in the installation speak both about the circumstances of its original commission and the new direction for the exhibition spaces at Northumbria University, now under the management of the university’s Department of Arts.
The exhibition will open alongside Laurence Kavanagh’s new exhibition on Wednesday 21 October from 6pm. Everyone is welcome.
