We’re delighted to announce the winner of the 2013 Great North Run Moving Image Commission.
The
selection panel had a difficult choice to make between the four artists
shortlisted this year – Margaret Salmon, Cecilia Stenbom, Melanie
Manchot and Phil Coy.
But after much deliberation they could only choose one artist to commission, and the winner is…
Melanie Manchot
"Working on the Great North Run Moving Image Commission will be
an exciting opportunity to engage with the themes of individual
motivation and the power of collective experiences by working with a
specific Newcastle/Gateshead community - a team of young parkour
runners. The commission allows me to further develop ideas on how a
camera can operate as a tool to articulate people’s complex experiences
of public spaces and architecture." Melanie Manchot

"We had a particularly strong shortlist this year but Melanie
Manchot was a clear choice. Her proposal to work with parkour runners on
the route of the Bupa Great North Run, showing people moving along and
interacting with this well-trodden course in an entirely new way,
inspired the selection panel. Melanie’s work is visually striking,
carefully and quietly observing participants, and we’re looking forward
to working with her over the coming year.” Beth Bate, Director, Great North Run Culture
About the Moving Image Commission
Every year we award an artist or film-maker £30,000 to create a new
moving image work in response to the world's largest half-marathon. The
work is then presented as part of the following year's programme with an
extract screened on the BBC as part of their live coverage of the Bupa
Great North Run.
The winners of our 2012 Moving Image Commission were Karin Kihlberg and Reuben Henry who are currently making The Order of Things, to be shown at NewBridge Space in Newcastle in September.
