The End of Civilisation, a new film by Turner Prize winning artist Douglas Gordon, was the starting point for an education project to produce work for Black or white, mainly grey.

For two months artist Paul Merrick worked with twelve Year 10 students from Walbottle Campus to develop a series of contemporary artworks for a public exhibition. The school’s unique location, close to Hadrian’s Wall, played a crucial part in the students' initial research. Context and place were explored together with themes of boundaries, barriers and borders, both physical and psychological. The students were asked to consider their identity and relationship to the unique place that is Walbottle. Douglas Gordon talked to the students at the Tyne Theatre, Newcastle about their project and his approach to making The End of Civilisation.

Young filmmakers from Tyneside Cinema's Northern Stars programme also produced this short film, The making of The End of Civilisation, including interviews with the artist and commissioners Great North Run Culture and Locus+:
